In a previous years, St James’ has had visits from Mr Stuart Marshall, a fencing coach who was one of our parents. Each class had the opportunity to try on the jackets and masks, touch the sabres and have a go at fencing. Mr Marshall taught us how to go “en garde”, how to make sure as little of our bodies could be hit and how to lunge. He also told us that, at the end of a match, it was polite to salute your opponent with your sword and shake hands.
Mr Marshall and his family have moved to America, we wish them all well. If you want to follow in Mr Marshall’s footsteps, why not have a try at fencing?
